Dr. Kevin Schoenfelder, a respected orthopedic spine surgeon, has recently retired after a distinguished 45-year career, during which he greatly influenced the field of musculoskeletal medicine. Growing up in Minnesota, Kevin's early interest in science led him to pursue a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Macalester College in St. Paul, graduating in 1974. His academic journey continued at the University of Minnesota, where he earned a Master's in Quantitative Genetics in 1975, laying a solid foundation for his medical career. He then completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) at the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1979, where he distinguished himself and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society.
Following his graduation, Dr. Schoenfelder interned at the University of California, San Francisco, from 1979 to 1980 and then completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Washington in 1984. Kevin then served as an Instructor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Washington, where he also took part in global medical education initiatives, including a role as a Traveling Faculty member at the University of Hokkaido in Japan in 1984. He further specialized in spine and pediatric orthopedics during a fellowship at the University of Hong Kong in 1985.
Dr. Schoenfelder's research and clinical work, particularly in developing spinal fusion techniques and advancing anterior spinal fracture fixation using the Kaneda device, have been highlighted at numerous prestigious medical conferences, including the Scoliosis Research Society.
In 1985, Kevin began his private practice with Puget Sound Spine Associates and later moved to the Franciscan Spine Group in 2008, where he continued his practice until retiring in 2018. His dedication to patient care was consistently recognized throughout his career, earning him quarterly 5-star Patient Satisfaction Awards from 2008 until retirement.
